Requirements
Requirements on the connectivity component of telematics solutions vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. There are, however, several commonalities:
- Wi-Fi 6 is the most required short range communication standard, but components need to be sourced minding upgrades adaptable to new connectivity standards (Wi-Fi 6E.7) and use cases.
- In general, high data throughput is essential for data offloading and OTA, typically requiring 2X2MIMO functionality. Specific use cases also require concurrent use of 2.4 and 5/6GHz band.
- Due to size and implementation constraints, solutions typically need to be compact and support high temperatures, especially when a smart antenna is positioned on a roof-type location.
As a result, Wi-Fi 6 (6E) with forward compatibility to Wi-Fi 7 is currently the most judicious technology choice for short range communication.
